| When we talk about photography composition, like any art composition, it is very personal. It depends on individual preference, and perhaps mood. Nevertheless, there is guidance on which you can use as a photographer. For my opinion, photography rules are something which you need to get along well, get comfortable with, and then explore beyond (read: break) them. I would like to share, based on my experience, how you can produce great photography composition by some 7 simple steps. These steps can be done by all photographers regardless their experience. |
1. Rule of thirds is still important - Obeying the rule of thirds helps your image greatly. The following image shows you how you can follow the rule of thirds. But don't stop there, instead try to break it, play and modify your photography composition.
2. Get out of common angle - Anybody with a camera can capture any object from the eye level. Yet only few photographers realize that simply taking photos from low angle creates a stronger effect on the image.

3. Simpler is stronger - Background strengthens your foreground objects. I personally like to use the blue sky, and cloudscape when available, to enhance my image. Keep in your mind that background should not be more attractive than the main object. One way to do it is by making the frame dominated by the main object.
4. Synergize - you don't want to have a truck when your image theme is smiling baby. If possible get rid of any unwanted elements. Otherwise play with the angle so that you don't have disturbance in the frame. Be creative on finding the sweet photography composition.
5. Check and recheck your composition - Do not be satisfied fast. Many times minor unwanted errors may occur, and you realize it when you leave the picture location. Get some shots of the same object from the same position, and make sure you check your image carefully before proceeding to the next one.
6. Practice makes perfect - mastering photography composition is not a one night success. Improve your skill by adding photo hours. Repetition is the mother of skills.

7. Learn from people’s experience - many people have been through your learning cure. See their works and try to do what they are doing, as long as you find their works are suitable for you.
There is no right or wrong at photography composition. You just have to go on with yourself. What makes you comfortable is always right for you. Keep exploring, be creative, stay hungry and stay foolish. The sky is the only limit.
Good luck and have fun!
